One of the main tasks of German Philology is to replace methodologically obsolete editions of medieval German texts. The project is part of a systematic editorial renewal of the complete works of Rudolf von Ems. Its aim is to provide a new edition of Rudolf’s ‚Alexander‘ which is both based on manuscript tradition and ‚author‘-oriented; a modern German translation, commentary, and introduction will be included. This will give impulses for interdisciplinary research on the literary tradition concerning Alexander the Great. Moreover, the edition will develop and evaluate a modernized version of traditional methods of textual criticism, reconstruction, and normalisation, which in cases, where the ‚author‘ seems within reach, may be preferable to the paradigm of manuscript-oriented edition dominant during the last decades.During the funding period applied for the commentary and the introduction will be completed.
