For the first time, it is attempted to analyse the relation between religion and science in the works of Gerard Mercator based on the cartographer's whole literary oeuvre as well as regarding the latest interpretative approaches. As the corresponding textual basis, it is planned to provide a historical-critical edition of Mercator's unpublished commentary on the epistle to the Romans in a bilingual, Latin-German version of that work. Thus, the project combines monographic analysis and edition. It aims at a contribution to the understanding of the conditions which determined modern science.
