We propose to follow the dynamical pathways of the atomic magnetic moments set by ultrashort laser pulse excitation in materials with antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled magnetic moments via magneto-optical spectroscopy in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral range (photon energy 20-200 eV). Methodologically, we will focus on the unique properties of resonant X-ray techniques to access element-specific magnetization dynamics with lateral and vertical spatial resolution. Our scientific goal is to use light to switch magnetic order on ultrafast time scales and on nanometer length scales, and to identify the microscopic processes that lead to the reversal of the magnetization direction in distinct sample geometries of rare earth/transition metals systems as well as in AFM/ferromagnetic bi- and multilayers.
