Project Description

We plan to develop the ultrafast creation of orbital excitations, observed in 4f systems within the 1st funding period, into a tool to control the magnetic anisotropy on ultrafast time scales. In terms of detection, we will turn the complementary use of magnetic spectroscopy in the EUV and soft-X-ray regimes available within the CRC/TRR into a quantitative probe for the locality of spin excitations. We aim to advance the understanding of antiferromagnetic dynamics both in terms of sample design and X-ray spectroscopic methods, and to develop the instrumentation and methods to detect spin dynamics induced by the injection of spin currents.
