We plan to investigate the dynamics of the magnetic and electronic structure, element- and state specifically, in 3d-transition-metal as well as in 4f-rare-earth systems. Our aim is to use high-energy resolution XAS/XMCD and RIXS to directly access the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the 4f electronic state and to analyze the dynamics in the 3d valence levels spin-specifically. To this end, we will exploit novel soft x-ray techniques at the new high-energy resolution FemtoSlicing beamline and make use of upcoming experimental capabilities at Free-Electron laser facilities. Furthermore, we will advance our experimental toolbox in order to study dynamics in short-period metallic antiferromagnets.
