Project Details
Ultrafast spin and orbital magnetism (A04)
Subject Area
Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
Term
since 2018
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 328545488
This project is divided into two work packages. Work package 1 will becarried out at MPI Halle (ultrafast orbital magnetism) and work package 2at MBI and FU Berlin (Control over magnetic order by spin- and orbital-currents). We will study dynamics of spin- and orbital magnetism in bulkmetals and interface structures using fully first principles time dependentdensity function theory. To do so we will develop formalism for determiningorbital moment in extended solids and implement it in electronic structurecode Elk. Using this we aim both to elucidate the fundamental physics oforbital magnetism in a regime of strong electric field transients andsubstantial charge excitation, as well as to generate novel routes to thecontrol of magnetic structure on femtosecond times via spin- and orbitalcurrents.
