We develop a multiscale model for ultrafast spin dynamics. We use atomistic spin dynamics methods parameterized from first principles calculations to model sub-picosecond spin dynamics of transition metals, rare-earths, and their bilayers after excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. Spin dynamics induced by THz radiation in the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet, and spin dynamics excited by ultrafast spin currents will be investigated. Our modeling complements experimental work to further understand and to control ultrafast spin dynamics and switching. The picosecond dynamics of magnetic domains is investigated by micromagnetic models, using the results of the atomistic spin dynamics model as input parameters.
