Experimental and numerical study of droplet motion and separation induced by aerodynamic and mechanical forces

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics
Mechanical Process Engineering
Term from 2018 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 398314989

The motion of droplets can be initiated in different ways such as shear flows, vibrational forces or gradient surfaces. Some of the influences can be superposed, whereupon some interactions are not investigated in detail. The current proposal introduces an experimental and numerical study for this purpose. This study covers droplet motion induced by mechanical vibrations and superposed shear flows. In this context a single as well as a two dimensional vibrational impact will be realized. The aim of the study is the determination of phase diagrams of the droplet motion as a function of droplet size, vibrational frequency and amplitude as well as the shear flow velocity. Furthermore, droplet separation due to the same experimental parameters will be investigated, too. Furthermore, numerical simulations with a Volume-of-Fluid model with additional models for the contact angle hysteresis will be made.
