RISOTO-BL will produce new water vapour isotopologue data for the tropospheric boundary layer where the isotopologue ratios are very useful for investigating exchange processes between the atmosphere, on the one hand, and the soil and the biosphere, on the other hand. RISOTO-BL will establish Karlsruhe as a unique reference site of boundary layer water vapour isotopologue ratios. The isotopologues will be measured by an in-situ analyzer and by a ground-based FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) middle and near infrared remote sensing system. The objective is a high data quality and an ultimate consistency between the different techniques. The scientific usefulness of the in-situ and the remotely-sensed data will be documented by comparison to isotopologue incorporated atmospheric models. RISOTO-BL ideally complements the European Research Council project MUSICA, which – in contrast to RISOTO-BL – focuses on the free troposphere and whose ground-based remote sensing component does not contemplate the high quality near infrared measurements performed in the framework of the currently establishing Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON).
