Simultaneous surface pressure and velocity field measurements with PSP and PIV/PTV in the Transonic Windtunnel Munich to quantify and minimize interference effects

Simultaneous measurements using the optical measurement methods pressure sensitive paint (PSP) to determine surface pressure fields and particle image velocimetry (PIV), or particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), to determine velocity fields are a technical challenge that has not been solved, to this day. However, applying both techniques simultaneously would significantly increase their efficiency and much deeper physical insight into the flow processes could be achieved. To reach his goal, the aim of this research project is to systematically quantify and suppress adverse interactions and interferences between both measurement methods. Furthermore, the measurement uncertainty of unsteady pressure sensitive paints will be reduced significantly within the project. This enables the simultaneous application of the measurement techniques to investigate unsteady flow phenomena and the improvement of novel measurement methods, such as pressure from PIV. The results will be utilized to investigate various fluid mechanical problems in the Trisonic Windtunnel Munich with high spatial and temporal resolution. The results will show under with conditions simultaneous PSP and 3D-PTV measurements are possible and also the measurement uncertainty will be quantified.
