The discovery of topological quantum materials and topological quantum states established a new chapter of condensed matter physics in the last ten years. One of the most remarkable topological phenomena are quantum excitations hosted in topological superconductors. These fascinating excitations, called Majorana states, unlike fermions or bosons exhibit non-Abelian statistics upon exchange. For this reason, they are considered to be crucial for topological quantum computing. This research goal of this proposal is to establish a novel platform based on magnetic atomic structures for controlling Majorana states. The fellow will be hosted in the group of Prof. S. Nadj-Perge at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), who was the first to measure Majorana states in atomic structures. For my experiments, I will use a highly specialized instrument which integrates scanning probe microscope with electrical connections needed for control of Majorana states. A strong team of world recognized theorists at Caltech including Prof. Alex Kitaev whose ideas initiated this research field, will support my efforts. This team of experts and highly specialized equipment make Caltech a unique place to pursue this type of research.
