Final Report Abstract

In this project, a polarization-sensitive, imaging terahertz near-field time-domain spectroscope with subwavelength spatial resolution has been built, which allows the experimental study of the temporal dynamics of the spatio-spectral properties of spoof surface plasmon polaritons on meta-surfaces and Goubau lines, as well as hybrid systems of both, at high field strengths. Similarly, the dynamics of surface polaritons in actively tunable systems can be studied. For example, both directionally and frequency selective couplers for spoof surface plasmon polaritons have been implemented in the project and these have been studied in terms of their spatial-spectral dynamics during propagation. As further exemplary studies, spatio-spectral propagation properties of surface polaritons on metasurface paths with widths in the subwavelength range were investigated in detail with respect to their applicability as a plasmonic terahertz network and the potential for use in sensor technology was evaluated. In addition, meta-surfaces with hyperbolic dispersion relation were designed and fabricated, on which nearly diffraction-free propagation and targeted deflection of terahertz spoof surface plasmon polaritons is possible.
