Final Report Abstract
The following scientific progress and impact concerning the application of FES treatment to counteract the effects of muscle atrophy can be reported: (1) successfull bilateral implantation of stimulation electrodes in aged sheep, (2) increased TAM muscle fiber diameter and slightly increased TAM muscle volume, (3) successful functional testing of twelve ex vivo sheep larynges (six sham and six stimulated), and (4) improved voice production of stimulated larynges compared to sham larynges but unclear effect of age as shown by statistical analysis including data of unstimulated old and young sheep larynges from preliminary studies.
