Final Report Abstract

The studies in this research project were completed within three WPs: • WP-1 in which the fundamental limits of HE MIMO TRs were studied. • WP-2 which investigated novel designs for HE MIMO TR. • WP-3 in which various secrecy aspects of HE MIMO TRs were investigated. The theoretical studies in WP-1 reveal the efficiency of the considered designs and technologies for HE MIMO TRs. They provide a generic theoretical framework from which various algorithmic techniques for digital precoding and analog beamforming can be derived. Our design-related investigations in WP-2 clarify the application of our theoretical framework, developed in WP-1, to the design of HE MIMO TRs. In particular, the results depict scalability and efficiency of IRS-based HE MIMO transmitters. This latter conclusion is in consistency with our initial intuition stated in the research proposal. The results of WP-3 further demonstrate the secrecy potential of large HE MIMO TRs. In this respect, IRS-assisted MIMO systems are shown to be very robust against various eavesdropping attacks. The results collected through the studies in the WPs propose new techniques and clarify the efficiency of various known approaches for design and implementation of HE MIMO TRs. As anticipated in the research proposal, IRSs seem to provide a good costperformance trade-off. A natural direction for future work is hence to conduct further research studies on IRS-assisted MIMO systems and IRS-based architectures. The work in this direction is currently ongoing which can lead to new research proposals potentially submitted to DFG.
