Service-centric View: Microservice Autoscaling and Caching in Edge Computing (C07#)
Subject Area

The term edge computing denotes recent efforts to provide cloud computing functionality in the users’ proximity, i.e. at the edge of the Internet; latency-critical applications, e.g., for Augmented Reality and the Internet-of-Things, may particularly benefit from these efforts. The proposed new subproject of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1053 will investigate edge computing in the light of the CRC; thereby it shall emphasize the CRC-wide issue of highly adaptive networks, taking a service-centric perspective. More specifically, desired functionality shall be modeled as microservices and two fundamental challenges shall be investigated, namely autoscaling and caching. The subproject shall devise new formal models and algorithmic solutions, and investigate their mapping onto the CRC-wide concepts of mechanisms and mechanism transitions. The formal model shall capture functional and temporal guarantees, two important edge computing aspects not covered in the CRC yet. Moreover, support for the coexistence of, and mutation between semantically different mechanisms in edge computing shall be covered, thereby exploring a new facet of CRC-wide concepts mentioned above; this new facet has the potential to inform the CRC as a whole.
