Final Report Abstract

In the project, 14,900 feudal charters of the Landgraves of Hesse which are kept in the Marburg State Archives in the Urk. 14 collection were edited. This can be considered one of the most extensive and dense holdings of feudal charters in the German-speaking world, but its use has hardly been possible until now due to the difficulty of accessing archival finding aids. All the documents were edited according to a uniform scheme that provides the most important features of the contents of the feudal deeds: Feudal lender and feudal recipient, type and extent of the feud(s), date and short formal description. The fonds Urk. 13, which contain documents with a large number of different legal transactions that, like the documents from fonds 14, not only cover the entire Hessian territory, but extend far beyond its borders, was edited by the state archive itself. All the documents in fonds 13 and 14 are freely accessible online via the archive database Arcinsys. Since Arcinsys provides fixed links, it is now possible to link reliably and permanently to the records from topic- or subject-related portals. After completion of the project, the Hessian Statearchive Marburg will be the first archive of this size to be able to make its entire holdings of documents available to researchers in modern online edition for a variety of questions and field investigations.
