Investigating of the production of several eccentric, non-circular cross sections using cross wedge rolling
Final Report Abstract
During the reporting period, the fundamentals of rolling non-circular cross sections were investigated. This was initially done theoretically with the aid of FEM simulations) and then evaluated experimentally. The aim was to use a transverse rolling process with flat dies to locally introduce the target shapes ellipse, eccentric and elliptical eccentric multiple times into an otherwise cylindrical semi-finished product. The Feasibility was confirmed for ellipse and eccentric rolling. The rolled piece includes three cylindrical sections and two sections brought to the target shape. The tool was developed in a modular fashion. Various approaches for calculating the tool engravings were tested for suitability with a constant semi-finished product diameter of 45 mm and increasing ellipticity and eccentricity. After a simulative investigation, the approach with the best target shape achievement for each case was selected. Simulative parameter studies were carried out for each target shape. The target shape achievement and forming force were defined as evaluation variables. Based on the results, parameter combinations and process windows for good part production were identified. Based on the results of the FEM simulations, tools were designed and manufactured. Experimental rolling tests were performed. The results of the theoretical investigation were confirmed experimentally.
