The goal of this project is to arrive at a better understanding of the contribution of voice quality and aspiration to prosodic prominence in questions, exclamations and rejections in German, Dutch and Icelandic. To achieve this goal we investigate the interaction of speech-act induced voice quality adaptations with changes in local pitch height, and we conduct cross-linguistic comparisons both for native and for second-language speech. Our aim is an adequate empirical description and theoretical evaluation of the interaction of prominence-related cues in speech.
