Automated intraoperative monitoring of facial nerve function
Final Report Abstract
The aim of the project was to implement a procedure as a module of a commercial platform. The method enables the automatic detection of pathological patterns in facial muscles, socalled A-trains. These patterns occur when the facial nerve is damaged during surgical procedures in the vicinity of the facial nerve, e.g. during tumor removal. The procedure was developed and validated by the applicant working group in previous projects and was not to be implemented as a certified medical product. To this end, a transfer project was carried out with the industry partner inomed Medizintechnik GmbH (Emmendingen). After an initial implementation on the inomed system, simultaneous intraoperative recordings were carried out together with the applicants’ system. The implementation was further optimized and methods for the compensation of recording disturbances were developed. The results were published and presented at scientific conferences. A final comparison of the systems will be carried out once the technical work has been completed by inomed. Integration in a certified medical product will enable clinical application in other clinics as well as performing a multi-center study on the clinical value of the method.
