Ternary Group 15 Iodidometalate Anions as Building Blocks for New Materials
Final Report Abstract
During this project, we have synthesized new compounds composed of organic cations and inorganic anions [MxEyIz]q– (M = Cu, Ag; E = Sb, Bi), as well as reference compounds with binary anions [EyIz]q–. We have investigated the single crystal structures and properties of the resulting materials. These materials represent new, low-cost, non-toxic, solution-processable candidates for semiconductor applications such as solar cells, LEDs or detectors. We were able to increase the number of known compounds with ternary [MxEyIz]q– anions, only 12 at the onset of the project, by 10. We investigated how the composition and structure motifs of these materials, as well as those with binary anions, correspond to their properties, particularly their optical band gap. We were able to establish and confirm guidelines for this, but also uncovered a complex influence of additional ligands like phosphines, the connectivity of smaller building units and non-innocent organic cations in our materials.
