The needs of a synapse - How local microsecretory systems and organelles serve synaptic function

Subject Area Molecular Biology and Physiology of Neurons and Glial Cells
Term from 2019 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 278170285

In this project we are investigating how local microsecretory systems in dendrites serve synaptic function. Two scenarios of secretory trafficking in dendrites have been proposed. We will determine whether local secretory trafficking is segregated indeed in two pathways from which one can bypass the Golgi. We will test the hypothesis that forward trafficking as well as recycling of synaptic membrane proteins is regulated by neuronal activity. Furthermore, we will analyze the mechanisms by which synaptic signals might impact local trafficking routes for synaptic membrane proteins. Collectively the experiments will shed light on the organization of forward and backward secretory trafficking in neuronal dendrites.
