Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Evidence from the study shows that, in India, attending preschool associated with later development of children and children who attended preschool performed better in Grade-I. However, this association was not uniform over different skill type viz. cognitive and social skill. Although attending preschool seems to help children in improving their social skills, there was no such evidence with respect to cognitive skills. Furthermore, there was no variation in child performance with respect to the type of preschool attended. Therefore, even though the quality of education provided are questionable, the role of preschools in India in developing children’s social skills is evident. Another important aspect evident from the study is that children from educated parents perform better at a later stage. Parents with higher education make sure that their children are exposed to lots of educational opportunities. This may because educated parents often engage in out of school teaching, unintentionally as in everyday interaction but also actively by helping with homework, etc. Therefore, the study advocates for policy interventions in early childhood education and care so that children can benefit more from it. This could be in the form of restructuring the ECE component of the ICDS programme and giving it greater importance. By providing an improved and more scientific curriculum to the children, ICDS can help children in greater skill accumulation. Besides, taking into account that parents mainly send their children to preschool for early education and school readiness, improving the ICDS programme could attract more and more parents towards the Anganwadi Centres. Given the fact that, ICDS is mainly targetted towards the marginalized section of the society, expanding its coverage and improving the quality of service provisions would certainly help children from the disadvantaged backgrounds building a strong foundation.
