The project, which is to be developed as part of a project academy for a DFG project proposal, is intended to investigate gaps and issues for assessing the legitimacy and effectiveness of sustainability-related governance in global value chains. The governance approaches to be considered range from the development and enforcement of codes of conduct, the involvement of companies in appropriate action and rulemaking programs to the use of company and / or industry-specific management and control instruments in global value chains, e.g. in the selection, evaluation and development of supplier locations. Here and in the context of further approaches, companies become (co-) designers of sustainability-related governance in global production regimes, without being legitimized or without using common democratic-theoretical criteria for assessing the process and output legitimacy (effectiveness) of these processes ).
