The "central analytics" section (sub-section "X-ray structure analysis") in the Department of Chemistry at Paderborn University provides scientific service for the whole university for structural X-ray analysis of single-crystalline, inorganic or organic compounds. In addition to data acquisition, the scientific service includes complete structure solution and refinement as well as structure discussion and publication. This proposal requests funding for a new single-crystal X-ray diffractometer which will replace the (only) existing equipment. After 17 years of continuous usage the old device is meanwhile extremely prone to failure and malfunction. The supplier company no longer offers support or service for this equipment; in particular, spare parts are no longer provided. The new purchase is therefore mandatory for maintaining the structure analytics operation. At the same time the proposed configuration of the new device reflects the technical improvements made in this field over the last decades. In particular, the brilliance of the 'microfocus' source offers significant improvement in structure analytics, such as with respect to the increasing amount of small crystals and samples with low scattering power. Also, the new device will facilitate analysis of disordered groups and solvation molecules as well as localization of hydrogen atoms, especially in the vicinity of heavy atoms.
