This subproject investigates the link between otium and screen technologies from large-format, com-munally viewed screens and multimedia exhibitions to small-format, individually operated smartphones and other networked media devices, and their impact on individual and collective oppor-tunities for and experiences of otium in a contemporary media city. The research objects are the Theme Park Ontario Place (1971–2011) and the smart city Sidewalk Toronto Project (2017–2020). How has the slow transition from ‘managerial’ to neo-liberal models of public space design in recent years affected the potential for urban otium, and what role do screen technologies (i.e. screens and moni-tors) play in this?
