Piezoceramics are being used more and more in technical applications, such as power transducers, ultrasonic acoustic sources, positioning devices, linear motors or rotatory motors. Along with the development of prototypes, the development of mathematical-mechanical models describing the behavior of piezoelectric materials (PZT) and mechanical setups has been studied in recent years. In the Darmstadt dynamics group, an ample competence in both fields, the research in materials behavior, among others regarding the piezoelectric shear effect, as well the development of models describing the dynamics of actuators based on PZT, has been generated since the 1980's. This project aims at minimizing the gap existing in the technology of actuators based on the piezoelectric shear effect, especially in ultrasonic motors (USM). Theoretically, this mode of operation should have a superior performance; however in practical applications it is rarely used. The goal of the planned research is a deeper understanding of the dynamics of shear actuators, development of guidelines for shear-effect based actuators, and deployment of prototype motors based on the gained experience.
