Final Report Abstract

The activities of this project were carried out in close cooperation between the AG- Scheidenberger at the II. Physics Institute of the Justus-Liebig-University (JLU)-Giessen (Germany) and the TITAN collaboration at TRIUMF (Canada). The central instrument of all activities is a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS), which was developed by the AG-Scheidenberger specifically for the TITAN experiment and installed and commissioned in 2017. Since then, it is used for experiments to investigate the properties of exotic nuclei. Furthermore, methodological developments were carried out that increase the performance (e.g., the mass resolution was doubled from 250,000 to 500,000), expand the possible applications (e.g., as an isobar separator and for beam diagnostics) and enable new, more advanced measurements (due to the increased sensitivity). The experiment spectrum includes precision mass measurements to investigate important questions of nuclear structure far from the stability valley, nuclear astrophysics and the limits of the existence of bound nuclei. The progress and results achieved were published in 14 peer-reviewed articles. With one exception, all of the goals formulated in the application were achieved; the only desired result that could not be achieved was the use of the MR-TOF-MS as a pre-separator for a mass measurement in the Penning trap, since the Penning trap of the TITAN experiment was out of service until the end of 2023; However, all preparatory work for coupling the two systems was completed, including the transport of separated ions from the MR-TOF-MS to the detector at the entrance in front of the Penning trap. The operation of the transport RFQ as a mass filter was not realized because the funding requested for this was not approved. The publications published during the project period even cover more thematic focuses than had been planned in the application. During the funding period, the routine operation of the MR-TOF-MS at the TITAN experiment was established and the instrument was used in nine experiment beam times during the funding period; in two of these experiments the Postdoc of the AG Scheidenberger, funded by this grant, was the spokesperson. Due to the large amount of data obtained and the ongoing evaluation, many more publications are to be expected: several manuscripts are currently under review, and even more manuscripts are in preparation.
