The „Kölnische Zeitung“ was one of the most important German newspapers in the 19th and 20th centuries. The newspaper ran more than 140 years (1802 – 1945). It was a trendsetting medium of the German press because of its enormous reach and great influence and because it was very innovative in terms of content and technology. Therefore the „Kölnische Zeitung“ almost perfectly fulfills the criteria for digitization according to the „Masterplan Zeitungsdigitalisierung“. The „Kölnische Zeitung“ will be digitized as part of a joint project of the University and State Library Bonn with the University and City Library Cologne and the Institute of Newspaper Research Dortmund and will be made available online at the newspaper portal „zeit.punktNRW“ of North Rhine Westfalia. The indexing standards – structuring of the images, optical character recognition - correspond to the basic standard, level 2, of the „Masterplan“. The presentation in the NRW-Portal will allow for access via the web service DFG-Viewer. The metadata generated in the course of the project will be supplied for regional and nationals portals like the future newspaper portal of the German National Library. The long-term storage of the images will be implemented on a server of the Hochschulbibliothekszentrum (hbz). The images and metadata will additionally be stored in the Digital Archive of North Rhine Westphalia (DA NRW).
