Time resolved optical spectroscopy is one of the basic methods for the characterization of luminescent organic and anorganic materials. Mapping the sample in two or three dimensions yields additional information about the structure and homogeneity on the sample. To achieve this, a combination of spectroscopy and spatial mapping is needed. Different sample types and geometries and a multitude of excitation and emission wavelengths in the visible spectral range place high demands on the measurement system. A combination of a confocal optical microscope and a spectrometer meet these requirements. One or more laser light sources are coupled to the microscope and guided onto the sample. The emission light from the fluorescence is guided back via optical fiber and coupled to a spectrometer which allows filtering using a monochromator and the usage of different fast detectors for spectroscopy. Thereby, the high spatial resolution of the microscope and the high temporal and spectral resolution of the spectrometer are combined.
