Final Report Abstract

Main outcomes of this project were on one hand the upgrading of the open-source software from the OpenFOAM-Foundation to allow simulation of mass-transfer processes in bubbly flows (group Rzehak), which now also takes into account the previously not considered time-dependence of the bubble composition. On the other hand a high quality experimental database for a bubble column with counter-flow was acquired (group Zähringer), which characterizes fluid dynamics and mass transfer for a large number of operational parameters. Finally, a comparison of simulation results and measured data was conducted, which provides an assessment of the presently achieved quality of the predictions and allows to specify further needs for research in the field of mass transfer in bubbly flows.
