Project Details
High resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) alternatively coupled to ion chromatography (IC) or liquid chromatography (LC)
Subject Area
Plant Sciences
Term
Funded in 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 423879281
A high resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) for metabolite analyses will be employed in different research areas. The machine can alternatively be coupled to a liquid chromatography (LC) or an ion chromatography (IC). The coupling to an IC will be used for the analysis of charged compounds like nucleotides and organic acids. One use of the mass spectrometer will be to provide indications about gene / protein functions in nucleotide and amino acid metabolism by performing targeted comparisons of (sub-)metabolome profiles in genetic variants. The machine will also be used to elucidate metabolic fluxes within organisms as well as in environmental samples. Moreover, the consequences of (intentionally introduced) genetic alterations on metabolite profiles will be investigated. Sample material will be derived from different plants (e.g. Arabidopsis, rice, peanut) as well as from the environment (e.g. biogas plant, earthworm excrements). The HRMS shall be able to reliably identify and quantify even low concentrated metabolites in these complex samples.
