Major aim of this IP is to identify giant piston coring and deep-drilling locations for retrieval of continuous Plio- Pleistocene Sediment records offTanzania. Although the main focus of the CRP is on Paleogene objectives, Uns IP project relates to younger parts of the record since they can be recovered äs well in fiiture IMAGES cruises with giant piston coring and with IODP drilling. In addition this IP aims to identify the composition of near surfäce Sediments on continental margin of Tanzania with respect to marine and terrigenous constituents in context of modern and Holocene climatic conditions in the westem tropical Indian Ocean and the east Afiican hinterland. This will be an essential prerequisite for flie planning of paleoclimatic research and use of certain proxies on flie long sediment records to be recovered after the seismic surveys proposed in this CRP.
