Design heuristics for target-oriented product development
Final Report Abstract
The project aimed at enhancing the utilization of design heuristics in product development by addressing research gaps regarding usage patterns of design heuristics (research gap 1), a unified structure for their description (research gap 2) and visualization (research gap 3) as well as the impact of such an unified approach on the design heuristic application (research gap 4). To achieve these goals, Interviews with industry and academic experts were conducted. Based on these insights, a prototype for capturing and displaying heuristics was developed that allowed an evaluation about the usage of design heuristics. Project outcomes include the development of a structured heuristic description, a tool integrating prioritized functionalities, and a dynamic heatmap visualization for heuristic comparisons. Integrating these into a didactic teaching concept positively impacted students' understanding of sustainable product development. The project significantly contributed to advancing empirical knowledge on design heuristics, providing structured descriptions, visualizations, and evaluation methods, facilitating their application in both industry practices and academic teachings.
