Final Report Abstract

The project studied how new knowledge is identified and legitimized in cross-border planning processes, in particular using the example of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Basel 2020. It examined the role of knowledge in planning and how it is created and recognized through communication and collaboration. The project identified historical and cultural factors as well as political structures of authority that affect how planning takes place. The analysis focused on how different actors interact and exchange knowledge as well as the role of documents and visualizations in legitimizing knowledge. We show how the border region is a complex planning environment in which different interests and dynamics converge. The results demonstrate that the construction of knowledge in planning is strongly influenced by social, political and cultural factors and that communication and cooperation between stakeholders are crucial for the success of cross-border planning projects.
