Cluster Hybrid Nanostructures

In the proposed "Cluster for Hybrid Nanostructures" the deposition techniques molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) and surface analysis by X-ray an photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, UPS) for growth and analysis of semiconductor thin films, hetero- and nanostructures are combined. The three systems are connected via a common (U)HV transfer system but can also be operated independently as stand-alone systems due to individual load-locks. The MBE system will be applied for the growth of group III-nitride (III-N) compounds and allows for continuation and expansion of the successful work on photonic nano- and quantum structures. The availability of an ALD-system in the same cluster additionally opens the possibility for new experiments in the field of hybrid nanostructures realized by the combination of optically active III-N nanostructures grown by MBE and ultrathin ALD films such as functional oxides or two-dimensional semiconductor materials. Such hybrid nanostructures allow the optical analysis of ion transport and storage processes in nanostructured electrodes, the controlled modification of the photochemical properties of III-N nanostructures as well as the realization of novel nanophotonic structures with optical coupling between different material systems. Moreover, the combination of both deposition techniques enables the integration of ultrathin nitride and dielectric layers for the fabrication of photonic device structures based on III-N nano- and quantum structures.The availability of a surface analysis system for XPS- and (angular resolved) UPS- analysis in the same cluster opens new perspectives for the synthesis of oxide thin films or two-dimensional materials and the advanced analysis of their optical and electronic properties. The resulting new possibilities for an intense collaboration of material synthesis and surface physics are intended to form one of the main pillars for the future activities of the Institute for Solid State Physics (IFP) at the University of Bremen. The proposed "Cluster for Hybrid Nanostructures" is the main component of the experimental equipment of the main applicant at the University of Bremen and forms the base for his future scientific work. Moreover, the system presents a substantial improvement of the preparative and analytic infrastructure for the IFP and the research groups collaborating in the "MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes" at the University of Bremen. The resulting outstanding experimental possibilities are intended to enhance the attractiveness of the local facilities for young researchers in the field of modern solid state physics.
