Usability-optimization of the interface parameters shape and material in an interaction-based arm-assistance-system

Subject Area Human Factors, Ergonomics, Human-Machine Systems
Term from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 430136438

During a laparoscopic operation, the surgeons often have uncomfortable static arm and upper body postures, which lead to high demands on the upper extremities. This can lead to fatigue and reduced effectiveness in the form of increased error rates during laparoscopic procedures. These deficits must be investigated and improved holistically. An arm assistance system can counteract these deficits. The arm assistance system supports the user by adaptively transferring a supporting force to the forearm via the arm support in all static and dynamic arm postures and movements. So far, studies have been carried out on the usability of the functional principle, the arm support area and the adaptive arm support force depending on the arm position. A relief of the upper extremities and improvement of precision was proven. In this research project, the interface parameters shape and material of the armrest for selected operating scenarios, which are based on the previous projects and have not yet been researched, are investigated with regard to usability. These are dynamic operating scenarios as well as inclined static forearm supports, which are influenced by the interface parameters shape and material of the armrest. Variations of the shape and material of the armrest of the arm assistance system during the execution of a simulated clinical task will be investigated. The usability parameters effectiveness (precision, motion tracking, workflow analysis), efficiency (time for task execution) and satisfaction (survey) will be collected and evaluated. The design recommendations developed in previous projects for the arm support area and the arm supporting force acting vertically from below on the arm support depending on the arm posture are used in the investigations. The arm support area consists of the support position on the forearm and the support length of the arm support depending on the forearm length. The result of the research project is a general statement on the shape and material properties with optimal usability for the user.
