In this Priority Programme the technologies, materials and assembly techniques, which will allow the fabrication of optical micro systems with controllable tunability will be developed. Recent developments in micro systems engineering, in particular the machining and hybrid integration of new types of materials, will allow new types of variable micro-optical components and systems to be conceived. The overall goal of the Priority Programme is the establishment of the scientific basis for as well as the technical capabilities of tunable micro-optics. Development of new and innovative concepts for tunable micro-optics will require the fusion of new ideas and concepts from fields as diverse as materials, optical design, optics fabrication, micro-mechanics, micro-fluidics and assembly and packaging technology. Of particular interest in this area is the field of soft matter, in which materials of optical quality may be deformed using mechanical, electrical or magnetic stimulation.
This concentrated research effort has the following overall scientific goals:
(1) development of new ways of tuning the optical characteristics of different types of micro-optical components,
(2) research into and application of the technologies available in micro systems engineering and MEMS to allow new types of tuning mechanisms for micro-optics and
(3) research, development and application of new materials for tunable micro-optics.
The development of optical tunability will allow a host of new applications in optics, micro-optics and micro systems, which were previously unattainable. These include
(1) extremely compact micro-cameras with variable zoom optics,
(2) miniaturised imaging and scanning optics for microscopy,
(3) endoscopy with variable zoom optics for medical or technical applications,
(4) tunable readout optics for next-generation optical storage systems and
(5) variable imaging optics using micro-lens arrays for readout of biochips.
Through this broadly-based cooperative research effort involving a large number of German research groups, working in these and related areas, it is likely that this programme can stimulate the development of a sustainable research focus in the area of tunable micro-optics in Germany.
