Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The project aimed at the demonstration of the assumed universal role static distortion waves (SDWs) play in the structure formation of organic adsorbates which exhibit non-commensurate epitaxy. To that end, several different molecule–substrate combinations were investigated structurally by means of low-temperature STM and distortion-corrected LEED. While many promising structures were indeed found, a direct proof for the presence of SDWs could not be achieved. A theoretical, machine-learning-based method was developed that allows to simulate systems with sufficiently large unit cells to capture the formation of SDWs. This method was successfully applied to naphthalene on Cu(111) and provides new insights into the impact of SDWs on the friction at inorganic/organic interfaces.
