Elektron-Ion-Rekombination im kryogenen Speicherring CSR

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The Cryogenic Storage Ring (CSR) operated by the Heidelberg Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) is an experimental facility that enables atomic and molecular collision studies under world-wide unique conditions. By cooling down its inner vacuum chamber to below 10 K an experimental environment is created that is characterized by extremely low residual radiation and particle densities. At the same time, the ion-optical layout of the electrostatic storage ring permits the storage of ions independent of their mass. The main focus of the CSR scientific program is on the chemistry in the interstellar medium. The present complementary project explored in how far the unique features of the CSR facility can be exploited for expanding electron-ion recombination experiments to classes of atomic and molecular particles, i.e., low-charged heavy atomic ions and fullerene ions, which cannot easily be investigated in conventional magnetic storage rings. In the course of the project, three different recombination experiments were performed with Ne2+, Xe3+ and C60+ ions, in this order. Ne2+ was chosen because of the availability of benchmark data from an experiment at a magnetic storage ring. The results obtained at the CSR agree well with these benchmark data. In addition, it could be demonstrated that the CSR provides access to highly excited Rydberg recombination resonances, which due to field ionization are not accessible at a magnetic storage ring. Having established that atomic recombination experiments at the CSR are feasible, a followup experiment with a first low-charged heavy atomic ion, i.e., Xe3+ , was conducted. Because of their genuine multi-electron character, such ions pose considerable challenges also for atomic theory. Corresponding state-of-the-art calculations were carried out in the MPIK theory division. The results agree only partly with the experimental findings, highlighting the need for experimental benchmarks to guide the further development of the multi-electron theoretical methods. These activities are timely since atomic cross sections for low-charged heavy ions are currently in the focus of astrophysical research in the context of neutron-star mergers and the ensuing kilonovae. Eventually, the first ever electron-ion recombination experiment with a fullerene ion was carried out with C60+ ions. In all previous experiments with smaller molecular ions, the energy transfer from the initially free electron to the molecule resulted in a molecular break-up. For C60+, nondissociative recombination of a molecular ion was observed for the first time.
