Final Report Abstract

As the early period of Bourdieu's sociological, ethnographic research in Algeria at the beginning of the 1960s has received (too) little attention up to now, it was examined during this project with a focus placed on so-called visual sociology. In a fundamental review of the Archive Bourdieu in Paris (Université Condorcet), the approximately 1,000 surviving photographs of Bourdieu were viewed, categorized and digitized and are now accessible to the interested public via a website. Further four publications were issued in 2022/ 23 that offer both an introduction to the subject and Bourdieu's research, as well as highlighting focal aspects (english translation: gender relations, 2022 and habitat and habitus, 2023, conversion of the gaze, 2022). The work on Bourdieu's visual sociology and his photographic archive takes on a special significance due to the fact that we were able to arouse the interest of the Centre Pompidou, which decided at the end of 2022 to acquire the entire collection of photographs and to provide it not only with a new home in the Bibliothèque Kandinsky, but also with optimal visibility and accessibility for all interested circles of the international scientific community.
