The contributing work groups of the University Medical Center Rostock investigate the pathological mechanisms and therapies for neurodegenerative diseases like parkinson’s disease, multiple sklerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and concepts of cellular and organismal aging. Therefore we use a variety of in vivo models, cell cultures and especially patient-specific iPSC derived cell cultures. To analyze such biological material fluorescence microscopy represents one of the most important tools. It enables us to make finest details in histological slices or living cells visible. Thus, we can distinguish between specific cell types in tissue slices or even subcellular compartments. Additionally fluorescence microscopy enables us to investigate the movement of subcellular organelles or proteins. Therefore we use established tracking scripts to analyze migration profiles of mitochondria as a main readout of our ALS research. To secure effective and competitive research in all of our topics the fluorescence microscopy equipment needs to be excellent. Thereby, the requested laser scanning microscope with airyscan perfectly fits the requirements of the contributing work groups and their specific research fields. With guidance from Prof. Hermann the LSM will be established and maintained at the Department of Neurology. It will significantly improve our research in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and furthermore it will contribute to the promotion of cooperative projects.
