Final Report Abstract

Streptophytic algae feature the closest sister lineages to land plants. Recent years have seen several genomes of this grade being sequenced, revealing exciting details of early plant evolution and plant terrestrialization by means of comparative genomics. Within the combined framework of the CharMod, CharKeyS and MAdLand projects, the idea was to establish two new model species, Spirogyra and Chara (in CharMod), and to aid their establishment and employment within the MAdLand (PP 2237) framework by generating two high quality assemblies complete with expression data (in this project, CharKeyS). Having these two genome sequences and expression data available will be beneficial for the plant community at large, opening new options for comparative genomics approaches unravelling streptophyte evolution.
