Final Report Abstract

Constantly increasing and changing framework conditions confront manufacturing companies with new challenges in the area of organizational design of their production. To ensure high efficiency in production logistics, a targeted configuration (method selection and parameterization) of production planning and control (PPC) is required, which takes into account the individual framework conditions of the companies and responds adequately to their market fluctuations. Although various concepts and frameworks for the configuration and implementation of PPC already exist, there is still a lack of tools that support the selection of processes to fulfill individual PPC tasks. In particular, the immense variety of methods for the fulfillment of a PPC task and their potential interaction with various other processes and tasks increases the complexity of the configuration decision of the PPC immensely. Often it is unclear from the perspective of the user which effects a PPC process has on the logistic objectives. In order to enable comparability of the different processes within a PPC task as well as the evaluation of different process combinations beyond the limits of individual PPC tasks, the results of the research project offer a differentiated and far-reaching approach. The target of the project was to analyze the PPC configuration as an elementary organizational task by means of a more profound view and a uniform description of the modes of action of the PPC processes as well as the interactions to be expected. The resulting effect chains were qualitatively analyzed considering the various (logistical) objectives and compared with existing approaches. Here, mostly a localization of further insights took place on the level of the PPC tasks. The effect of the different PPC methods for the fulfillment of a single PPC task on target variables was therefore further investigated qualitatively. In addition to the qualitative investigation, it was also possible to carry out a quantitative analysis of the interdependencies by using logistic models, which made it possible to mathematically link the effects of different PPC tasks and their configuration concerning their effects on objectives. The result of this research project can be divided into the collection, structuring, and consistent description of the PPC methods. In addition, a systematic investigation of the effect of the PPC methodsas well as their interactions on logistic objectives was conducted, which contributes to consistent modeling of production planning and control. Furthermore, the results in the form of scientific contributions enable companies to analyze their existing PPC configuration for weaknesses concerning target conformity and to gain a deeper understanding of the individual PPC configuration of companies.
