Research Center for Sustainable Fuel Combustion

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics, Technical Thermodynamics and Thermal Energy Engineering
Term Funded in 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 435139629

At the new Campus Maschinenbau Garbsen of Leibniz Universität Hannover an ultra-modern research surrounding will be developed, where energy conversion will be investigated within the research collaboration "Dynamik der Energiewandlung, DEW" (Dynamics of Energy Transition) together with partner institutes. The Institut für Technische Verbrennung (ITV) will contribute essentially in the field of clean combustion of sustainable fuels (energy carriers) like hydrogen, methane and natural gas mixtures, ammonia, as well as synthetic liquid electro-fuels. This requires a flexible research environment with modern measurement devices, fulfilling the requirements of future research and emission legislation, and to regard the increasing importance of cross-sectoral aspects of sustainable energy within the energy transition. At ITV fundamental experimental configurations are investigated to develop physical-chemical models of the processes and allow validation targets for comparison with numerical modeling. Additionally research engines and combustion rigs allow the measurement of combustion processes, emissions and efficiencies under real size conditions for the utilization of sustainable fuels. This requires modern test benches, allowing flexible utilization with modern measurement equipment. This enables to study the scientific basis for sustainable energy carriers of the future, which can be produced from renewable electricity and from biomass, to promote their future application. In the context of the energy transition, this is a decisive factor to achieve the climate targets. The Institute is already part of the Excellence Cluster "Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation" with research on synthetic electro-fuels for future aviation. The submitted laboratory together with the new building infrastructure will provide an innovative environment for future-oriented research on post-fossil combustion processes with good cooperation potential to partner institutes.
