Novel n-Doping Approaches for Organic Semiconductors

Subject Area Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 435285835

Doped organic layers are crucial for many novel device concepts. In particular, organic photovoltaics (OPV) require efficient doping materials that are needed for transport layers and the recombination contact in multi-junction cells. However, the access to n-dopants with superior electronic properties remains challenging. A high ionization potential and strong doping ability in connection with airstability and processability represent the key requirements. We have identified three novel substance classes that offer potentially cost-effective and scalable synthetic access in conjunction with highly promising ionization potentials based on DFT-calculations: cyclopropenyl imines, indacenes and pentalenes. The new substances will be extensively characterized in terms of their performance in single layers and solar cell device in close collaboration with the industry partner Heliatek GmbH for an efficient exploitation of the application potential of the new materials.
