Integrated GNSS / IMU measuring unit for the flexible determination of highly accurate reference trajectories for navigation

Subject Area Systems Engineering
Term Funded in 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 436385244

The requested device represents a measuring system consisting of a high-precision inertial measurement unit and receivers of signals of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for the flexible determination of reference solutions in navigation applications. This is time-referenced information about the navigation states of the object, i.e. time series of position, velocity, acceleration and orientation (positional angles, rotation rates) in three-dimensional space. These devices are used for the validation of innovative navigation algorithms developed by the working group, for the determination of the sensor performance, as well as for the thorough description and reduction of measurement deviations. The requested device enables the working group to answer questions of high-precision navigation and to develop new navigation concepts for a multitude of applications, for example for automated driving in an urban environment. Here, prominent research areas are: exploring advantages of using ultra-stable atomic clocks for GNSS-based navigation, investigating and developing suitable correction models for multipath effects, and the further development of the virtual receiver concept. In addition, a Kinematic Test Booth Navigation will be installed in which trajectories or movement patterns (e.g. buoys or ship movements) can be generated and traversed on a small scale with the help of a robot arm. This enables comprehensive tests of multi-sensor systems and atomic clocks under dynamic stress for the first time, which forms the basis for the development of suitable analysis software and improvements in sensor technology. Finally, the device acts as reference sensor technology for novel quantum inertial sensors, which are currently being developed in cooperation and which will allow long-term stable navigation of the future.
