Subject Area
Mechanical Properties of Metallic Materials and their Microstructural Origins
Term
from 2020 to 2024
Project identifier

Although hard coatings have a substrate protecting strength and stiffness, these coatings have limited ductility. We will design hard coatings that employ phase-transformations to increase the coating toughness. Because these coatings have a thickness on the order of micrometer, experiments for this length-scale are required to understand the fracture toughening mechanisms. We will employ micro-fracture experiments with in-situ techniques to quantify the domain of phase-transformation. Simulations will account for the substrate and the coating structure, will calculate the crack driving force for each geometry as well as will guide every iteration of the design.
