Project Details
Caging Carbon: Intercalation of Nano-onions and Supramolecular Encapsulation of SCAs (A09*)
Subject Area
Organic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term
from 2020 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 182849149
The project is devoted to carbon cages which are interesting nanoarchitectures in fundamental supramolecular chemistry and it introduces the carbon nano-onions (CNOs) in the SFB as a new type of carbon nanostructure. The project will investigate the intercalation of CNOs with different alkali metals and their reductive functionalisation. The relationship between defects and functionalisation degree will be established (ROLE OF DEFECTS). This methodology will be used to tune their properties and to use CNOs as scaffold to prepare INTER-SCA-ARCHITECTURES. Furthermore, molecular nano-cages and cyclophanes with an accessible void will be synthesized based on various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) building blocks with linkers of different nature. The cavity size and behaviour will be tuned in order to optimize host-guest interactions, selective carbon recognition and self-assembly (CHEMISTRY ON SURFACES).
