Electronic Couplings in the Excited States of Crystalline and of Structured Carbon-based Solids (B14*)
Subject Area

The project will determine the electronic coupling strengths in inter-SCA-architectures using time- and angle-resolved (two-photon) photoelectron spectroscopy. The coupling strengths are crucial for the functionality of inter-SCA-architecture, and difficult to quantify using other techniques. A first work package will focus on carbon-based two-dimensional networks coupled by organometallic and covalent bonds. These systems are synthesized directly in ultrahigh vacuum using on-surface chemistry. A part of the project aims to decouple the networks from the surface to make them accessible to photophysical experiments and potential applications. A second work package investigates the non-covalent couplings in three-dimensional crystals of SCAs and in co-crystals of SCAs and molecular π systems, respectively. Different geometries (flat and curved π systems) will be studied. A third work packages will make the unique experimental facilities of our group accessible to other projects within the SFB 953 (electron emission from diamondoid-coated surfaces and from graphene-based devices, electronic structure of carbon nano-onions).
