Aim of the project is to investigate and optimize the intrinsic functionalization of glass-ceramics from the lithium-alumino-silicate-system. The functionalization shall be achieved during the transformation of the isotropic glass into an anisotropic glass-ceramic and shall address the following areas: high-strength application, optical anisotropy, chemical durability. The aforementioned objective shall be achieved via controlling the atmosphere during ceramization and via application of electric fields during ceramization. At first, suitable glasses must be produced which then need to be characterized by thermomechanical and thermochemical methods to develop suitable ceramization programs. With these ceramization programs the glasses will be transformed to a glass-ceramic in said electric field and/or controlled atmosphere. The achieved glass-ceramics will be investigated in terms of their mechanical, chemical and optical properties. Ideally, fields of application can be attributed to the respective materials after characterization and prototypes can be produced. Also the strategy for further investigations can be settled.
